Wireless FAQS
You only need a computer or mobile device that is Internet-capable. As an option, GVEC Internet offers a router for an additional $6 monthly rental fee to connect multiple devices. Renting from GVEC Internet also allows for improved troubleshooting in case of any technical difficulty. If you experience slow connection speeds or dead spots in certain areas of your home, GVEC Internet also offers our home Wi-Fi optimization mesh network solution. Our system uses between one and four wireless “pods” ($2 monthly rental fee per pod) to extend your network signal to areas of the home where devices may struggle to connect, stay connected or deliver practical speeds. Our pods work seamlessly with our router, too, providing maximal performance from your home network. Visit our Home Wi-Fi Optimization page for more information.
Fiber FAQS
GVEC Internet is a local company dedicated to the communities we serve. Because of our GVEC Internet roots, we believe in the cooperative purpose which not only includes attention to detail and top-quality service but also in giving back to the communities we live, work and play in alongside our members and customers. We also believe in providing a good value, so our affordable plans include unlimited data with no hidden fees and friendly, 24/7 technical troubleshooting. Here’s another important reason: our Fiber to the Home product is different from the Fiber service offered by some other providers. Like them, our fiber optic cable is made up of thousands of glass fibers which increases bandwidth and the ability to deliver large amounts of data from the Internet at very high speeds. But, what sets our service apart is that our Fiber cable runs into your home and directly to an Optical Network Terminal (ONT). This device then provides service directly to your computer and other devices using a wire or wireless connection.
Other providers don’t have this seamless connection. They may only connect their fiber optic cable to a pedestal or hub in your neighborhood, and then from there use a copper wire to carry service to a box on the exterior of your home, which is then connected to jacks or ports inside your home. Using copper wire as part of the process can reduce reliability and speed, as well as degrade over time.
- Reliability – Fiber Internet offers the most reliable delivery because the service runs through a fiber optic cable rather than through the air like wireless. So, your service won’t be affected by atmospheric conditions or other carrier frequencies. You also won’t have to worry about signals being blocked by trees or buildings.
- Speed and Capacity – Fiber optic cables have the necessary bandwidth to deliver large amounts of data at one time from the Internet to multiple devices. Data is transmitted at significantly higher speeds – up to 1 Gbps by GVEC Internet, which is up to 125 times faster than some wireless plans. For residential plans, uploading and downloading speeds are symmetrical, which means you can upload items as fast as you can download. Data is unlimited so you’ll only pay one flat fee each month.
- Security – Internet service via fiber optic is as safe as any other secured delivery service. Like any Internet service, you need to install a fire wall and antivirus protection program, and keep it up to date.
