Wireless FAQs

What is high-speed wireless Internet?

GVEC.net’s high-speed Internet services utilizes a wireless network that employs radio signals to transmit data.

Why would I choose GVEC.net over another service provider?

GVEC.net is a local company dedicated to the communities we serve. Because of our GVEC roots, we believe in the cooperative purpose which not only includes attention to detail and top quality service, but also in giving back to the communities we live, work and play in alongside our members and customers. We also believe in providing a good value, so our affordable plans include unlimited data with no hidden fees and friendly, 24/7 technical troubleshooting.

What is the activation process?

Once you contact us by phone, online or in one of our offices, we will map your address to see if your location is in range of one of our towers. If so, we will open an account, help you select the plan that’s right for you and call you within the week to make an appointment to meet you at your home or business for installation. Before we install the equipment, our technician will ensure we have a clear line-of-sight for the radio signals to travel from your location to our tower. If there are obstructions such as trees, hills or buildings that block the signal, we may not be able to provide service. The installation process takes about two to three hours.

What is the activation fee?

The activation fee is $99 for all wireless residential and business plans.

Are there any other fees?

In addition to the activation fee and the monthly cost for the plan you select, there is also an equipment fee. You can either pay a $10 a month rental fee or $500 upfront for equipment.

What equipment will I need?

You only need a computer or mobile device that is Internet capable. As an option, GVEC.net also offers a router for an additional $3 or $6 monthly rental fee to connect multiple devices.

Is there a discount for GVEC members?

There isn’t a discount for members. To meet the needs of all of our customers, we’ve priced our plans to be affordable without special discounts or deals.

What can I do with the different speeds?

Capabilities depend on the speed plan you choose. With most plans you can surf the web, send emails, engage in social media, do online banking, chat, pay bills and with the higher speed plans, you can stream movies and games.

Will several members of my family be able to connect wirelessly to the Internet at the same time?

Yes. To create a Wi-Fi environment in your home, you can use your own high performance router or rent one from us.

Do I have to make a commitment?

Yes, for one year. See our full Terms of Service here.

Fiber FAQs

What is Fiber Internet?

Fiber Internet is the fastest, most reliable Internet available in the world. That’s because service runs through a fiber optic cable which offers greater bandwidth to deliver large amounts of data.

Here’s another important reason: our Fiber to the Home product is different from the Fiber service offered by some other providers. Like them, our fiber optic cable is made up of thousands of glass fibers which increases bandwidth and the ability to deliver large amounts of data from the Internet at very high speeds. But, what sets our service apart is that our Fiber cable runs into your home and directly to an Optical Network Terminal (ONT). This device then provides service directly to your computer and other devices using a wire or wireless connection.

Other providers don’t have this seamless connection. They may only connect their fiber optic cable to a pedestal or hub in your neighborhood, and then from there use a copper wire to carry service to a box on the exterior of your home, which is then connected to jacks or ports inside your home. Using copper wire as part of the process can reduce reliability and speed, as well as degrade over time.

Why would I choose Fiber over wireless Internet service?

  • Reliability – Fiber Internet offers the most reliable delivery because the service runs through a fiber optic cable rather than through the air like wireless. So, your service won’t be affected by atmospheric conditions or other carrier frequencies. You also won’t have to worry about signals being blocked by trees or buildings.
  • Speed and Capacity – Fiber optic cables have the necessary bandwidth to deliver large amounts of data at one time from the Internet to multiple devices. Data is transmitted at significantly higher speeds – up to 1 Gbps by GVEC.net, which is up to 125 times faster than some wireless plans. For residential plans, uploading and downloading speeds are symmetrical, which means you can upload items as fast as you can download. Data is unlimited so you’ll only pay one flat fee each month.
  • Security – Internet service via fiber optic is as safe as any other secured delivery service. Like any Internet service, you need to install a fire wall and antivirus protection program, and keep it up to date.
What is the activation process?

Once you contact us by phone, online or in one of our offices, we will determine whether you are in a Fiber-ready area. If you are, the process may differ depending on where you live and whether further construction to get the fiber cable to your home is required. Activation is done in two steps: in general, it takes two to three days to drop the fiber connection to your home or business—you don’t need to be there for work to take place. Then we’ll make an appointment to meet you to connect the Fiber inside your home, which generally takes one to two hours.

What is the activation fee?

The activation fee is $99 for all residential and business plans.

Are there any other fees?

No. You’ll only pay an activation fee and the monthly cost for the plan you select.

What equipment will I need?

You only need a computer or mobile device that is Internet capable. GVEC.net also offers a router that you can rent for an additional $3 or $6 monthly rental fee to connect multiple computers to bring this ultra-fast connection to your home.

Is there a discount for GVEC members?

There isn’t a discount for members. To meet the needs of all of our customers, we’ve priced our plans to be affordable without special discounts or deals.

What can I do with the different speeds?

Just about anything you want – faster and better: Internet gaming, stream video and music, download movies, upload pictures, pay bills, work from home and more.

Will several members of my family be able to connect wirelessly to the Internet at the same time?

Yes. To create a Wi-Fi environment in your home, you can use your own high performance router or rent one from us.

Do I have to make a commitment?

Yes, for one year. See our full Terms of Service here.

If I am a current GVEC.net customer, what happens if I switch to Fiber?

We will waive the early termination fee for switching to a Fiber plan. You will begin a new one-year commitment and pay the $99 activation fee for residential or business service.

When will Fiber service be available in my area?

Our Fiber network is continuing to grow! We’re always looking for new places to roll out our extreme-speed Internet, and now you can see any future plans for your area, and even invite us to bring Fiber Internet to your neck of the woods.
