Reading Quadrant Bearings

These are the four 90° quadrants used
when writing a land description.

A bearing is written as the number of degrees minutes and seconds away from North in a specified direction for quadrants 1 & 4, and as the number of degrees minutes and seconds away from South in a specified direction for quadrants 2 & 3 as shown above. These bearing "calls" can be found completely spelled out or abrieviated in the deed records.

The bearing call for the direction which is 45 degrees away from North in an Easterly direction (quadrant 1) can be found written as follows:

North 45°-00'-00" East
or
Northeast 45°-00'-00"
or
North 45° East
or
Northeast 45°
or
N 45°-00'-00" E
or
N 45.0000 E
or
N 45° E

All of the calls above mean exactly the same thing and are descriptions of the direction shown in the FIRST example below.
