Another very important part of our life -- one that helps
further "define" who we are -- is our relationship to the
Catholic Church in our local civic community. This "family,"
in which we both serve and are served, has become most dear
to us over the years. What does the Scripture say? "Since
we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us,
let us exercise them... in proportion to our faith." (Rom12:6)
In so far as we can, without compromise to our monastic calling,
we strive "to place our gifts at the service" of the Church.
This has involved us with our local Catholic community in several
ways: First, as a teacher: We have taught children of all ages
and adults, both by way of general catechesis and sacramental
preparation. Striving to spread knowledge and love for the
Bible, we have taught (and continue to teach) Scriptures...
both in the church and our own home. We have worked in social
ministry, and at the altar -- as lector and minister of the
Eucharist. Over the years, we have done the Boy Scout thing;
we have cooked hamburgers at the fiesta, prepared and published
Mass Scriptures commentary. We have announced the parade,
visited the sick and consoled the sorrowing. We have sang,
taught singing, formed and led choirs; we have been on committees.
And, in return, we have been richly fed and nourished by this same
community... with the weekly Eucharist, with long and lasting
friendships, in the fellowship of the liturgy. Exlore our
