Gonzales Lions History


The Gonzales Lions Club was organized by R. Roy Keaton of Lions International, and sponsored by the Austin Founders Lions Club, at 12:15 p.m. on the 3rd of May 1940 at the Alcalde Hotel in Gonzales Texas with 16 Charter Members, B. Duncan Davis as President and M.C. Todd as Secretary. At 8 p.m. on the same day a meeting was held to elect officers for the newly formed club.

One month later on the 3rd day of June 1940 an official charter night was held with 40 Gonzales Lions Members present, more than doubling in size in one month, and over 200 Lions present from eight other clubs attending the event.

Through the years the phenominal success of the Gonzales Lions Club continued. On September 9, 1941 the Gonzales Lions Club sponsored the Nixon Lions Club. On September 16, 1968 the Gonzales Lions Club sponsored the Gonzales Evening Lions Club and changed their own name to the Gonzales Noon Lions Club. On October 30, 1986 the Gonzales Noon Lions Club sponsored the Gonzales Lioness Club for women which went on to receive their own charter June 16, 1992 as the Gonzales Tejas Lions Club. On April 23, 1990 the Gonzales Noon Lions Club sponsored the Gonzales Beakfast Lions Club. On April 2, 2000, with the 60th Anniversary of the club only one month away, the Gonzales Noon Lions Club sponsored the Waelder New Millennium Lions Club. In June of 2000 the President of the Gonzales Noon Lions Club, acting in conjunction with the Presidents of the other Gonzales Lions Clubs, formed the Gonzales Lions Committee to help coordinate activities between the clubs.
