When can I go and meet with God?...My soul is downcast within me; therefore I will remember you from the land of the Jordan, the heights of Hermon—from Mount Mizar. Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me…Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.” Psalm 42: 1-2, 7, 11 This rushing mountain stream near the ancient city of Dan, is actually a tributary originating from the mountain snows of Mt. Hermon, that eventually flows into the Jordan River. As our group hiked the trail through the dense trees to the ruins of the walled city of Dan, this scripture that David wrote came to my mind. David spoke of Mt. Hermon, which is at the very northern border of Israel and was still snow capped when we were there in April. I imagined that David sought refuge at times in the thick underbrush as he was being pursued by his enemies. He watched as the deer lay in the thickets until the evening when they would quietly come to the streams to water. David’s soul thirsted to worship the One true God, but so often he cried out with a heart that reflected his feelings of abandonment and loneliness. As he reflected on the truth of who God is, he reminded himself and us that our hope lies in our God and that our praise will bring us into a more intimate relationship with Him. “God inhabits the praises of His people.” If you are feeling lost and abandoned, or spiritually dry and empty, turn to the gracious One who never leaves or forsakes you. Praise Him in your private worship time with songs and prayers. Encourage your spirit by reminding yourself that the One to whom you pray created heaven and earth. Nothing is too hard for him. Our souls were made to worship and praise the One True God. Put on a great praise and worship album and let your spirit soar in private worship to our magnificent Creator God!
