Day #3, 294 miles, Tuesday 7/20/04
We were packing the bike by 6:30 am.  It was a beautiful, sunny morning!  We had breakfast at McDonald's and then went to the Colorado Welcome Center.  We planned our route for the day and then went to the library to get online and check e-mail and touch base with friends.  We then went to the much recommended Duffy's Barber Shop.  Jesse was in dire need of a haircut!  The guys at the barber shop were very friendly, both the barbers and the customers.

We then rode on the Highway of Legends.  We stopped at Stonewall for a cold drink.  Right by the small town is the incredible Dakota Sandstone walls.  We were told they go all the way to Utah!

Jesse - The gate to the left is supposed to be the site of a WW II Prison.

MaryAnn - To the right is the great stone wall.
Quite unexpectedly we came upon a large stone castle being built by a man and his wife.  It was very tall, with walkways above the stone.  There was a voluntary donation box by the door and many signs made by the builder stating his views on the "system".  He obviously had trouble with zoning commissions and other government agencies over his unique building.

The castle is on a mountain and reaches high in the air.

There is a dragon head built into the top front of the castle.
We stopped at a T in the road and visited with 2 bikers from LA and TX.
Later we ran into more showers, but had enough warning to put on our rain gear.  It soon cleared up and became very hot and sunny, so we took off the rain gear.  It wasn't long before the showers came back and we had to stop to put on our frogg toggs again!  This time it was just a few sprinkles.
We ate dinner in Leadsville, CO and got a room on the edge of town.
